Yesterday I did my weekly "long ride", a sixty =/- mile loop thru South Natick, Dover, Sherborn and Medfield, on the new sport tourer you designed and built for me. I've had it now for about 5-6 weeks, have put approximately 500 miles on it to date and am delighted with it. Thank you ever so much for this lovely living masterwork...read more. I have only put around 800 miles on it so far but let me tell you Peter, this bike is absolutely fantastic. It is so comfortable that I don't want to get off of it. The miles slip by effortlessly!! I think this bike is actually teaching me to be a better rider. It corners like a hot knife going through butter and climbs phenomenally. I have received numerous compliments on its appearance.(and more than one jealous look!) I just want to say thank you for such a beautiful machine that brings a great big smile to my face every time I am in the saddle." Best Regards ~ Bill "...Why, oh why, did I wait 25 years to do this? I was never able to imagine why I'd want to ride anything besides my old Raleigh Pro. Now I know why. This bike is everything I wanted--even though I didn't even know what I was missing before. Besides being a breathtaking piece of art, it is an amazing piece of machinery. The first time I rode it I was startled by the smoothness and the ease of the ride--it felt like a tailwind no matter what direction I went. Anyway, I'm still getting to know my bike, but I didn't want to let another week go by without thanking you again for building such a great bike for me." Thanks, Peter. ~ David "...Back to the main thing, the bike! Again, I love it. Rather than bleat about unquantifiable properties like liveliness and predictability, I'll say that it's even more than I hoped it would be. I've used top-flight equipment in a number of activities, such as ski-racing, so I have some sense of the difference between a good machine and an extraordinary one. There's a bigger gap between good bikes and your bike than there is between the top and the very top in any field I've worked in. Most importantly, cycling is fun again. Part of it is that I'm no longer fighting an abrupt and punishing frame, but even more, your bike seems to remove everything extraneous and leave the plain activity itself. It's a wonderfully simple thing, taking your bike outside and going for a ride. I get my shorts and my shoes on, carry the bike downstairs, and an hour later I'm whistling along some road I've never been on before in Wayland or Concord, glad to be there, and glad you've made it possible to experience things in just this way. Wonderful. So, in short, thank you. See you again soon." ~ Michael "...I hate to patronize, but I must commend you on a frame well built, and that has stood the test of time in the last 17-18 years of "spring" training rides that always seem to last from October through May! Thanks again and I wish you much success in your business." ~ George "...After about 4.000 miles this season, I thought I'd tell you how much I'm enjoying my bicycle. Aside from the kind of thing you've probably heard a lot - that it's very comfortable and handles beautifully - I've found that it's actually teaching me how to ride better, an unexpected gift. Besides workin' good, the bike is, of course, beautiful & attracts favorable comments from other riders and a lot of 'I'm planning to make my next bike a Mooney'. I hope they all do." ~ David "...By now you're likely back from Europe and still haven't heard a word from me about the new bicycle. I plead, 'I was out riding'. I love my new Peter Mooney. It took me about five seconds to figure out that it is beautiful - the paint suggestion was excellent - and only a little longer to admire the care with which it was put together. The filing and brazing are impeccable; I'm glad I got it bare frame so I could look inside the BB and the head tube and see unpainted brass and steel. I suspect that the guy next door who recently got a Waterford is somewhat jealous. The fellow who built the frame up for me also had much to say about its quality, noting that it was the finest frame he has ever worked with - and that includes just about everything ever made in Italy and plenty of U.S. custom frames (Admittedly, he was particularly smitten with the fact that he could thread all the parts in by hand without cleaning a thread). The first ride was something of a surprise. I expected to spend mile after mile in revelation. That happened for only the first few hundred yards, during which I was acutely aware of how fine it felt. Then, almost without noticing, ten miles had gone by. There was no acclimation time; the bike was just there doing whatever was asked of it, fitting like a glove. Since then I've had a few hundred miles to appreciate other aspects. This is far and away the most pleasant bicycle to corner that I have ever ridden. To be honest, it's the first one I enjoy cornering. And that's coming from a former motorcycle roadracer. The size and geometry are exactly right for me. My longest ride on it has been only 50 miles so far, but I enjoyed not feeling that sensation of being ready to get off the bike. I keep looking for side tracks to add miles to my routes." ~ David "...Now that I've been a few miles on the new bike, WOW! Thanks for crafting such an even-handling frameset. I feel like it was built for me - wishbone stayed and lugless, meters smooth response to power and speed, and has great balance, uphill and down. This frame is capable beyond my experience, but I'm learning fast. I expect it will provide many miles of exciting, dependable instruction. I realize it is an odd thing to say, (to refer to as coach a handful of tubing) yet your frameset does have personality!" ~ Jeff "...Through these years of riding, I have owned a Puegeot, a Miyata and a couple of Treks, in that order. I always thought that buying a top-of-the-line bicycle was frivolous - somehow so extravagant that I put it into the Rolex watch category. What I have found on your bicycle is that the comfort in riding is never-ending, the ride is smooth, and the control of the bike is as if it is part of one's own body. In climbing hills, I find little difference, except perhaps in the lack of flex, although I'm probably not that good a rider to be a capable judge of such refinements. In descending hills, however, I know that I could go no-hands around corners while pedalling (I am not so stupid to do that, though). In the downhills, one knows the bicycle will not move except where I want it to. On straightaways, the ride is smooth, the pedalling almost fun, and the body relaxed. As you can probably tell, I like the bike. It is much more than I expected. My only regret is that I did not do this earlier." ~ Tom "...Now then, about that bicycle... Spring came late to Allegany County this year, and I'm still riding with winter legs and lungs. Normally, I hesitate to judge a bike until I'm in peak condition and can fully put the machine through its paces. Nevertheless, I believe I have enough saddle time to say with conviction tat I've never owned a finer frameset. On the road, my Mooney Signature is everthing you promised. The fit is dead on and the machine handles the way I always imagined a properly-sized racing frame should. Besides allowing correct frame dimensions and positioning, the 650c wheels give the bike almost telepathic responsiveness and acceleration. In comparison, any similar sized 700c frame I've ridden feels like a shopping cart. If more people chanced to ride them, I think smaller wheels could even catch on for 'normal' sized frames. As for me, I'll never go back to 700c. I'd also like to compliment you on creating a frame of outstanding beauty. In eight years of riding and wrenching, I've seen frames ranging from Eisentrauts to DeRosas. Aesthetically, none have impressed me more than my own Mooney. The work you did for me embodies my ideal of the 'classic steel road bike'. From the fluted seatstay caps to the spotless lugwork, the frame is a powerful statement of the simple elegance totally lacking in so many modern nonferrous 'superbikes'. Thank you, Mr. Mooney, for encouraging me to see this project through to the end. Rest assured your reputation is safe in Cumberland, Maryland. Perfectionists are hard to please, but once satisfied, they make for great publicity. Anywhere I go among knowledgeable cyclists, the bike never fails to attract attention. Best wishes for your business and family. You have restored my faith that craftsmanship and integrity can survive in the bike business." ~ Christopher "...A few words to tell you how much David and I are enjoying our Peter Mooney bicycles. Last week we took four day trips and put the bikes through the paces - hills, dirt roads, long cruising stretches - and the bikes performed perfectly. We both agree our Peter Mooney bikes were a perfect 35th Anniversary gift. Our thanks, Peter." ~ Melissa & David "...Just wanted to let you know that for almost 15 years now I have been enjoying one of your creations. It was initially built for Don back in 1985. Fortunately for me, he got married and needed the money, so I paid for it. Also fortunately for me, we had similar builds. The bike is still in near perfect condition, one minor nick in the paint on the shift tube. It probably has about 60,000 miles on the frame and it still feels very tight. Just thought you might like to know where your work is and how it is doing." ~ Peter |
